RED101 DVD Harnesses Technology In A New Way, Enhancing Learning Experience
March 3, 2010

Dreamwelder Productions uses existing DVD technology in a new way for the first and only DVD training series for the RED ONE Digital Cinema Camera.

Jay A. Kelley, president of Dreamwelder Productions, one of the early adopters of the RED ONE camera in the United States. He has worked regularly with the RED ONE and other companies, beta-testing new options and accessories for the camera. “With the RED ONE, you have a lot of choices, and while choices can mean power, they also can create a steeper learning curve when you’re starting out,” states Kelley, the host of the RED101 DVD. “The RED ONE Camera is its own animal and uses a lot of visuals and menu systems that are unique.  This is not a camera you can just pick up and know all about.”

In what is the first in a series of instructional DVDs, Dreamwelder Productions uses the technology of the DVD format to create one of the first videos that allows the viewer to “jump into” more in depth videos while watching a specific segment.

“We’ve seen this technology used before on the special features section of a DVD.  An icon shows up on screen and when you press it you see a small documentary on the special effects used to create the scene you just watched.  It occurred to me that this same technology could be used in education and training as well.  Allowing the viewer to get more information on subjects they may not know about, but letting them pass by if they are already comfortable with the topic.”

Kelley believes that people who are “a little too smart” often create today’s training videos, especially in the film and video areas.  “I remember when I was starting out, I kept hearing people throwing around technical terms and numbers that I did not understand. I thought, Opeople don’t have enough concern and respect for those of us who are just starting out.’  And these guys were my teachers!  In creating the RED101 DVD, I felt my focus needed to be on the beginning of the process, not the middle or end of it.  There are lots of techo-geeks out there who LOVE to talk about the cooler aspects of technology, but few want to take the time to explain the simple stuff, let alone make it entertaining.  That’s where I come in.”

The RED101 DVD provides over 3 hours of material, PDF menu guides, and is hosted by Kelley with an engaging and entertaining style.

“The DVD covers quite a lot of info, and Jay is on camera talking to you for a lot of the video - His homespun style is fun and enjoyable, it's not a flat, boring instructional DVD - he's got lots of his personality weaved in there.” - Ted Schilowitz (RED Digital Cinema)

Based on the RED101’s critical success to date, this innovative technique will be a tool for other educational DVDs in the months and years to come.
