Harkness Screens Takes Viewers on a Very Important Date at Alice in Wonderland Royal World Premiere in London
March 8, 2010

Spectral 240 Brings 3D Fantasy Adventure To Life.

London — Harkness Screens, the world’s leading manufacturer of projection screens for cinema applications, was the screen of choice at the Royal World Premiere of Tim Burton’s 3D fantasy adventure movie, Alice in Wonderland, at London’s Odeon Leicester Square cinema.

The Royal World Premiere, which took place on Thursday, February 25, featured a Harkness Spectral™ 240 screen, RealD XL and NEC projectors.  Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall attended the event, along with the film’s stars and various celebrities.  The event benefitted The Prince’s Foundation for Children & the Arts.

The Spectral™ 240, commonly referred to as the “silver screen,” is used for ‘passive’ front projection with 3D systems using polarised light, including the RealD XL, because of its high extinction ratio and the spectacular 3D images it provides.  The surface also supports 2D images and can be used successfully in applications where 2D and 3D are both shown.  The intrinsically high gain (2.4) overcomes light losses in 3D systems.

“We are delighted that our Spectral™ 240 was able to provide a memorable viewing experience at the Royal World Premier of Alice in Wonderland,” says Andrew Robinson, Harkness Screens managing director.  “Combined with RealD’s XL system, we are able to deliver fantastic, bright 3D images.”

Starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen and Mia Wasikowsak as Alice, Alice in Wonderland is the story of 19-year-old Alice who returns to the magical world from her childhood adventure, where she reunites with her old friends and learns of her true destiny: to end the Red Queen’s reign of terror.

Harkness, which makes screen surfaces optimised for all 3D technologies, has provided the majority of screens for 3D presentations worldwide.
